Manarola

|
Along
the path called the "Love street" (Via dell'Amore) we reach
Manarola, which is situated on a steep promontory of dark
rocks. The little port is closed between two rocked spurs,
but the lack of space obliges the ships to shoal near the
steep rocks. Founded by the inhabitants of the roman settle
of Volastra, the village grew close to the river which is
covered nowadays.
|
From
the main axis you can follow a lot of little streets paved
with stones that lead to the houses at the side of the promontory
and to the kitchen-gardens. At the highest point there is
the church Natività of Maria Vergine, of 1338, a mix of
gothic (with a rose-window with little columns and holes
in the façade) and baroque (the interior with basilican
plant with a nave and two aisles) style.

It
is almost obligatory to have a look at the fantastic works
of the 15th century, one of them representing Saint Lorenzo
between the Saints Antonio and Bernardino. Outside the village
there is a picturesque cemetery from where you can enjoy a
magic view of Manarola.
