Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso rose after the destruction of Albereto caused by
the Longobards, and in 1276 it was handed over to Genoa that
built the defences against the pirates. Monterosso offers
the most beautiful beach of the Cinque Terre, which is very
attractive for the tourists..

The
old village is intact and dominated by the castle. The visitors
have to see the church of Saint Giovanni the Baptist of 1244,
splendid example of ligurian gothic style, with the facades
in marble and local stone and the bell tower that originally
was a defence tower. The historical-architectural richness
is noticeable also by the death and oration Oratory and by
the convent of the Capuchins with the crucifix attributed
to Van Dyck.
