It
became practically the bulwark of Genoa against Pisa that
had extended their power till Lerici. In Porto Venere you
should absolutely visit the Church of San Pietro erected
in the Arpaia promontory between the 4th and the 5th century
over the rests of a pagan temple.
Moreover, we advise you to see the church of San Lorenzo,
the house of the Doria and the castle (beginning of works
in 1161 and completed in the 16th century. In the village
Le Grazie you should have at least a short look at the rests
of the "Villa Romana del Verignano", built between 80 and
85.
